NFT: A New Era?

I like NFTs—or at least, the ideas they represent. But things change over time, and we have to face the reality today: they’ve become, at best, a speculative tool, and at worst, a way to scam people.

Writing about this might seem pointless now, but with most of the useless projects finally gone, I believe that more than ever, the values that were there at the start of this ecosystem need to be brought back into focus.

To me, these values aren’t necessarily financial. They’re the ones that work toward the “greater good.” What’s the point of transparency if there’s no accountability? What’s the point of decentralization if it only strengthens centralized entities? With our usage, what real-world changes have we achieved? And finally, what good are regulations if civil society remains excluded from the discussions?

NFT Market Analysis

USD volumes and sales have dropped back to levels similar to 2019, suggesting that only the hardcore speculators from 2021 and the original enthusiasts remain. While the former are all about freemints these days, the latter are focused on historical collections, leaving only low or temporary volumes for new ones.

Key takeaways:

  • PFPs: Collections like CryptoPunks, Bored Apes, and Pudgy Penguins continue to capture attention and dominate the market.

  • Digital Art: This segment has seen gradual stability over recent months, especially with large sales of XCOPY’s works.

  • Virtual Worlds: Interest here is almost at a standstill, with very little activity.

NFTs on IMX and Ronin aren’t yet supported by Dune, but gaming now makes up a significant share of the volume, both in terms of sales numbers and USD volume. Adding them to my dashboards is my next challenge 💪

CASH HasArt Exhibition

On October 5, 2024, at Aubergine 3000 in Malakoff, Arke, Cake One, HappyDoji, C-La, Oli, and I came together to hold an exhibition themed “Money in Art.”

Entry, the bar, and the minting of digital artworks were all offered at a “pay-what-you-want” rate, designed to send a different message than the typical marketing-heavy and sometimes misleading narratives around “NFT Art” or “Web3” exhibitions. To bridge the digital and physical realms, visitors could scan the artworks using Artivive to see an animation appear in augmented reality.

In a joint agreement among the artists, the physical works were then raffled off to NFT holders. This was the first exhibition I organized, entirely funded (about €350) through reselling NFTs.

The story behind: Brice

Do you like marmots? Even better—do you like marmots that collect satoshis every month? That’s the concept behind Marmottoshis, a project led by Doc Marmott. Through defensive DeFi strategies and a few affiliate links, profits are converted into satoshis each month and distributed equally among the NFTs. All you have to do is burn your marmot to redeem its satoshis 🔥

When Doc asked me if I’d be interested in creating one of the marmots, I said yes right away! At first, I didn’t have a name or a surfboard; I just wanted to take on the challenge of drawing a marmot—even though I’m not used to creating figurative art.

Combining a popular French film (Brice de Nice) and a nod to my meeting with Doc, this marmot now surfs pixel waves—and diligently stacks satoshis every month.
